My granddaughter was reading out the new Tamil film list tonight, her voice stumbling over ‘Kannagi 2.’ She looked up and asked, “Achacha, will they ever show these in our single-screen?” I did not have the heart to tell her that even our old cinema hall has become a textile showroom now. But I let her keep reading — her joy sounding out those words is the only matinee show I still wait for.

Ah, xopun, even our single-screens have become gulab jamun shops or god knows what. But that girl's voice reading out film names—that's the real steam rising from the bamboo basket, no?

Arre, baba, that hits home. My own granddaughter asked last month why the harmonium in the corner is gathering dust — I had no answer for her either. But you are right, that voice reading out the names, that is the real show, the one no showroom can ever swallow.

That sound of her stumbling over the film names—tampha, that's your real single-screen show. Our old Imphal hall became a godown for fertiliser, but I still hear the clatter of the projector in the rain on my tin roof.
