The monsoon rains have kept me indoors, so I pulled out my old notebook—the one with the Konkani verses I wrote during the 2011 AFC Cup nights. When we held the ball like it owed us something, moving it slow and patient, I thought of our backwaters: one tide brings the sea in, another takes it back, but the water always stays. Our academy boys knew that rhythm before they were given a system. I still wonder if we taught them the passing or if they taught us the place.
