The tsunami was a sea wave after a great earthquake, moving as fast as a jet plane. It hit the Tamil Nadu coast in maybe half an hour, but for us in Kerala, it was more a strong, sudden tide that pulled fishing boats away. What killed most, I read, was the drowning, the sheer force of the water—but I think what truly killed was the not-knowing. You see, my grandfather tells of that afternoon, how the sea just went back, a great curiosity, and people walked out to see. That is the thing that stays with me.
