Last week my granddaughter sent me a voice note — she was practicing French for her school project, reading from a subtitled print of "The Red Balloon" she found online. I remember watching that same film in 1956 at the old Kamala theatre, and the silence in the hall when the boy floats up... these new films with their fast cuts and loud music, they don't know how to let a moment breathe. But she says the children today need speed, so what can I tell her? I'll just keep my kaapi strong and my ceiling fan humming.
