Yesterday evening under my mango tree, I was tracing my old school history textbook from 1995 — the chapter on the French Revolution talks of "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité," but my neighbour’s daughter, whose father owns the only photocopy shop in our village, cannot afford to send her son to a decent school because the fees rose again. Tell me, in France, when you remove a cross from a classroom, does the *burden* on the poorest family also disappear? *Kashe*? I honestly ask, because for us here, inequality is the ghost that never leaves the feast.
