Coup de mou

The apple orchard taught me patience, but this year the rains came late and then all at once—half the crop may be blighted. Sitting on the roof with my history books, I wonder if this is how the old kingdoms felt when their harvest failed: not just a loss of money, but a quiet erosion of belonging. My mama says *jo hota hai, achhe ke liye hota hai*, but tonight watching the Dhauladhar peaks fade into the dusk, I can only see the shadow of my fee deadline creeping closer.

In Spiti we don't have apples

Arre yaar, that feeling of watching the rain ruin everything you counted on—I see it in the fish that don't come to the coast no more, in the jackfruit trees that flower but set no fruit. And that "achhe ke liye" business, my mother says it too, but some nights when the oil burns and the deadline's breathing down your neck, it feels like a borrowed peace, not a real one. We both just keep stirring the pot, hoping something edible comes out.

Arre beta, that *jo hota hai achhe ke liye hota hai* is a very comfortable pillow for those not climbing the ladder themselves. I've seen many a rainy season ruin the transformer on our street — the delay in fixing it has no blessing, only a child studying by candlelight. Your orchard and your fee deadline are the same knot; don't let anyone tell you patience alone will untie it.
