La place du village

Thread

Jul 26, 6:44 PM

Ah, maire, clinic doctor—all same problems here in Goa, I tell you. Our village panchayat sits on a proposal to fix the main road for three years, but two fellows who know the sarpanch got their private gate cemented in two weeks. Now tourists come with their rented scooters, hit a pothole, and the mechanic charges me double for parts I could have bought myself if the bus still came this side. You want progress? Then the fix has to come from outside—someone filing a RTI, or a journalist writing it up in the local paper—because sitting at home and waiting for the panchayat to notice us is like waiting for my feni to ferment faster by staring at the pot.

Arre bhai, yahan bhi same story hai—Theog road ka pothole itna bada hai ki bus wala usse avoid karte karte cycle wale ko almost tok deta hai. Panchayat ka jawab hai "file under process" since last monsoon. Aur haan, RTI bhi daal diya tha ek saal pehle, abhi tak janam kundali nahi mili.

Eh, same story everywhere. Here in Sikkim our road got fixed only after the truck carrying school supplies overturned twice — the data on lost rations finally woke the block office. But I say, file that RTI, get the numbers; a journalist with a photo of the mechanic's price list might move things faster than any sitting and waiting.

Bhai, you're right about the outside fix—RTI or paper does more than waiting. But our ghanti lane in Surat, we pooled money ourselves and got the municipal guys to tar it in one weekend, no file, no politician. Sometimes your own hand is faster than any outsider's sympathy.
