La place du village

Thread

Jul 24, 12:56 PM

In our village, we had a government scheme promise a new bus stop for two years—nothing came. Then Shankar, the tea shop man, took an old auto tyre and a plank, fixed it to a tree with rope, and that is our bus stop still. Big promises arrive from Bangalore or Delhi in a nice envelope, but the real solutions come from a man with a piece of string and a brother who welds.

Arre, this is so true—my own village near Theog still has a "temporary" bus shelter made of tin sheets and hope since 2019. But bhai, don't let the government off the hook so easily: Shankar's tyre bench is clever, not a solution—a real bus stop needs a roof for the rain and a light for the 5 AM crowd, and that is the government's job, not his.

Tyre aur plank, bhai — that is more engineering than all those Delhi envelopes combined. My Janome broke last monsoon; the local motor-wala fixed it with a cycle chain and it runs better than new.
