This morning I was trying to fix an old transistor for a bhaiya in the next village, and the whole time I was thinking — we have a committee for everything up here, for the water, for the road, for the school, but the pipe has been leaking near the temple for three months and no one can agree on whose turn it is to buy the coupling. My father would have just gone, bought the fitting from Dehradun on his own, fixed it in one afternoon, and taken chai from the neighbour as thanks. We sit and we talk and we talk, but the knee keeps hurting and the apple saplings need their second dose of fertiliser this week — I think there is a kind of theft in that delay.

Arre, that pipe story is too familiar, bhai. My father also had that habit — if a shelf was loose, he wouldn't call a meeting, just hammer it straight. But nowadays, we spend more time debating whose screwdriver to borrow than actually fixing the leak. Still, three months for a coupling? That's not committee problem, that's our government forgetting to stock basic fittings in the district supply.
