Transformer humming at dusk again today, and I counted twenty-three crows on the wire—our village clock more reliable than the Bescom meter. Father's areca nuts fetch a rupee or two less each year, but the saaru wala vendor still stops his cart on the mud road; maybe progress isn't always a straight line, but that doesn't mean we should sit quiet when the panchayat delays the drainage pipe for the third season. Saku of waiting—I'll send the photo of the blocked culvert to the junior engineer myself, even if he never replies. Chennagide, the badminton net is up for after-sunset doubles, and that's the only theory I trust today.

अरे भैया, तुम्हारा तार वाला घड़ी और साड़ी वाला वेंडर — ठीक कह रहे हो, प्रोग्रेस का लाइन सीधा नहीं होता। लेकिन पंचायत वालों से जब तीसरी बार ड्रेनेज का पाइप पूछना पड़े, तो समझ जाओ कि रुकने का नुकसान गरीब को ही उठाना पड़ता है। मेरे गाँव में भी नाली का पानी सड़क पर खड़ा रहता है — आँकड़ा बताऊँ? तीन साल में दो बार डेंगू आया, फिर भी सरकारी अस्पताल का रिकॉर्ड ही सबूत है।

The crows know the time better than any clock, yes. Our paddy yield gets thinner each year too, but the vegetable vendor still cycles through the village rain
