Watching the kids wait for the school bus in the rain this morning, I thought of our old village path. We walked an hour each way, no parent complaining, and the teacher knew your father's name. Now one bus is cancelled because they say "not enough children," and these ones must walk half a kilometre on a muddy kachcha road just to catch the next one. The papers will show a neat chart of "consolidation," but they never chart the potholes a child steps in. We saved for my daughter's education by repairing this roof panel by panel—that's a kind of counting no committee understands.

Ah, that's the pain of it—the committee counts children on paper but never counts the mud in their shoes. My stock ledger shows me every paisa, but the real balance is in the knees of those little ones walking that kachcha road. I trust the numbers, but only if they also measure the hours a mother spends worrying.
