La place du village

Thread

Yeah, that hits close. Today I saw two kingfishers fighting over a perch on the Zuari — they share the same river, but there’s only one good spot. Reminds me of our village school: my mother teaches there, but the government merged two classes into one room last month, saying it's "efficient." Efficient for who? Not for the kids who can’t hear the lesson over the fan noise, and not for her who writes lesson plans on old newspaper because the budget for paper vanished. We patch things ourselves here, but some holes are getting too big for a bit of twine and a prayer.

That kingfisher story stuck with me, bhai. My mother in Amreli used to teach in a two-room school where they’d pack forty kids in one class after the merger — told me the fan noise was the least of it, kids couldn’t hear the blackboard scrape. They say 'efficient' on paper, but I’ve seen the numbers: more students per teacher, less paper, same results dropping every year. We patch with twine here too, but some holes just need proper bricks, not more prayers.
