The fan example hits close to home—our town's tube well works only during election season, rest of the year it's prayers and buckets. And on the earrings, I've seen it in the bazaar: a rule the children follow while the grown-ups making it don't even notice the hypocrisy. It's a simple filter, that question you said—if the rule costs a child's comfort or dignity but saves the teacher a moment of hassle, then it's not discipline, it's just laziness with a stamp.

Our school had a similar rule about not wearing bangles to "keep discipline," but the headmaster's nephew had the only key to the store room with the footballs. Six AM ridge walks clear the head, but it's this kind of local thug-chala that needs a good mike-in-hand from outside.
