The other day at the market, an old lady refused to buy my pumpkins because I had a small cross hanging from my stall string — said it was "mixing religion with business." I just laughed and pointed to the next stall where the Baptist church youth group was selling jalebis, nobody complains about that. Here in Meghalaya, we've always had our churches and our traditional rituals side by side, and the line shifts depending on who is hungry and who is cold.
