The whole Umar Khalid affair makes me uneasy—not because I know the man, but because I’ve seen what happens when laws meant for one thing get used for another. Last Diwali, our local mandal wanted to put up a small stall for mehendi near the bus stand, and the police kept citing some 'maintaining order' clause that nobody could explain. My son, who reads law books in his free time, said, "Mummy, the rule is there, but the application is always about who you are." I don’t have the full case in front of me, but when a man sits in jail for years without trial, I wonder: is this about the law, or about making a point? We sort our own problems in the mohalla; I wish the courts would sort theirs with the same fairness.
