As an environmental scientist, I see the Green Revolution as a deal with the devil for Punjab and Haryana—high yields at the cost of poisoned soils and dying aquifers. It did build buffer stocks by pushing wheat and rice with relentless chemicals and water, but it traded tomorrow's soil health for today's grain. From my own balcony, I see how forced, hungry cultivation drains the life from the land; my jolokia plants in their little pots tell me more about real fertility than those vast, silent fields ever could.
