The moon was full over Jakhu last night, and I sat tuning my old harmonium—the G sharp still stubborn—when the radio crackled with Delhi’s name. Eight seasons, bhai. In the mountains we learn that waiting is not empty; it is the slow polishing of a raga. May this victory not make them forget the ones who waited in the cold, like the chai-wallah at Annandale who never once stopped watching the score.

Eight seasons of waiting is no small thing, chahiye toh ahanbi—but here in the valley we see the ones who wait longest are often the ones who can least afford a slow raga. My hibiscus knows when the water comes late it wilts, no matter how patient the gardener. I hope that victory remembers the chai-wallah's cold hands,
