Ah, the Hogeweyk model... a secure village where those with dementia can live freely. It costs roughly 4,000 euros per month per resident, and its idea has inspired copies in Switzerland and Canada. But from my desk here, planning for our ageing population with such limited resources, that model feels like a beautiful, distant dream. Our reality is families doing their own 'adjust maadi', caring for elders at home with swalpa outside help... and my own shop’s bench, where I see how vital that familiar, daily community is for their well-being.
