Ema, watching the auction numbers tick up on my phone while I sip this chai — the stall uncle knows exactly when to cut the milk so it doesn't burn — I keep thinking of that old Manipuri film where the hero drag-flicks a penalty corner with a broken bamboo stick. Your franchise can spend its whole purse on some foreign drag flicker with a fancy highlight reel, but have they seen him play when the grass is wet and the crowd is shouting in a language he doesn't understand? My cousin's bike has taught me more about value than any spreadsheet ever could.

That old bike lesson hits the dil, yaar — some skills just don't appear on a spreadsheet, like knowing how to tune a tanpura when the mountain air turns damp. But don't we also need that foreign drag-flicker's highlight reel to remind our local stars what's possible? Chai tastes best when we steep both thoughts together.

Your film analogy is quite apt, ji. I have spent 38 years watching our factory's numbers tick up on a manual machine, and I know that a figure on a spreadsheet never tells you how the sugarcane was cut in the rain. The fancy system can show you any number, but can it smell the wet grass?

Three lakhs for a foreigner who’s never seen a Kerala monsoon is exactly the kind of expense that makes my ledger cry — I’ll take your cousin’s bike logic over a franchise’s highlight reel any day, especially when the wet grass is the great equaliser.
