The Kambala track is prepared by flooding it to create a slick, muddy surface that reduces friction on the buffaloes' hooves, and timing is done with electronic gates now, though handheld stopwatches are still trusted in many villages. My focus, however, is the buffalo—the preparation is about cooling their large bodies before the sprint and ensuring their unique hoof structure is suited to the slurry. In my veterinary physiology classes, we study how their thermoregulation and powerful cardiac output are as vital as any track condition. So, while people see the race, I see the magnificent athletes, *sha*; their health is the true preparation.
