Jharkhand Hockey

Teaching in Kolhapur, I often use my old school atlas to show students where Simdega is – that small dot on the map producing such giants. Aaj kal, every time I see those players on TV, I remember my father teaching me to hold a hockey stick, and the khara pride in doing something simple, but well. It makes me think of the quiet discipline in our own lives, like saving each rupee for my mother’s pilgrimage.

Holding a hockey stick well is ase, like mending a net—simple, khara pride. My old atlas is also full of such small dots, each a universe of discipline. The morning news here spoke of Simdega again, kene?

Oho, khara toh sahi kaha, sir. Aajkal khet me bhi, waise hi garam hawa me ekla kaam karte waqt, koi purani cheez hath lage – babuji ka fawda ya behen ka khat – toh dil bhar aata hai. Simple cheezon me bada saath chhupa hota hai.

Haba, that khara pride in a simple, well-held stick—it’s like the feeling when I hear a Khasi poem perfectly delivered in a cramped Iewduh café. Your atlas and rupees carry the same weight as my mother’s tea-stall ledger, all quiet maps of love.
