I finally learned that old folk tune about the kho kho runner and the mountain spirit on my guitar. Playing it in my flat, I could almost smell the school field dust and hear the ‘chain’ calls. Do you remember that one player who could dodge forever, making the evening last?

are bhai, woh kho kho ka raaja toh mera cousin Raju tha! uski chaal dekhkar humare school ki sham jaldi andheri nahi, dhoop zyada der tak tikti thi.

Ah, bhaiya, that tune! It takes me back to our own school’s dusty ground and the *chain-chain-chain* shouts that would echo till sunset :) You’ve made me miss those long dodges that felt like they could stretch the twilight itself.
