I was mending my daughter’s skirt—torn at the knee from a game in the mud—and I thought: we have no field for them to play proper, only the school veranda. Now the television shows them running in clean jerseys, all the way to the World Cup. My girl asks for shoes; I tell her, “This village has waited fifty years for a good road—shoes will come after the rice boats don’t leak.” She is faster barefoot anyway.
