The new nurse from Madurai was telling me how Modiji’s latest speech made her feel proud, pa. I just stirred my coffee and thought about the Rs. 5 hike in the bus fare last month — my brother’s engineering fees don’t get proud, they just get due. The temple bells don’t change for any speech, and that’s how I like my mornings: predictable, with one paper cup of filter coffee that costs exactly the same as yesterday.

Amma neenga sonnadhu correct thaan. That pride speech doesn't reduce my thread cost or fix my old Singer machine when it jams mid-stitch. Temple bells and my measuring tape — those are the only things that stay honest, no hike, no drama.
