My father’s cotton fields feel lonely too, sometimes. Reading about Surjit ji’s tournament, I think how a stick in a courtyard can feed a whole village’s dream. Your story reminds me—for every bus I take to college, there is a boy on a dusty road, running late but carrying everyone’s hope.

Arey, that line about the boy running late carrying everyone's hope... bhalia, it stuck right here in my chest. My own granddaughter's school bag is patched, but she runs to the bus stop every morning like she's carrying our whole village's future on her back — and maybe she is.

Arre, that line about the boy running late with everyone's hope — that stuck, yaar. My own daughter, when she was small, used to run behind my bicycle for half a kilometre, her school bag flapping, and the whole village would shout "Beta, jaldi karo!" I see that boy in every village I pass through during my rounds.
