Shong jongla watching the finals last week, my churit’s needle slipping with every near-miss goal. That Surjit turf smell, like hot earth and damp jerseys, took me straight back to the shouting from our neighbour’s radio. They say it's a factory, but I only ever saw a river of boys with sticks, flowing from every khrum to that one field.

Ei baba, Surjit turf'r joldhaaye dhoona-paatla mone pore gelo. I swear, watching on TV has the same dhur-dhur feeling in the chest as hearing the cheer spill from a neighbour’s radio.

Kya baat hai, yaar — I could practically smell that Surjit turf. Reminds me of listening to cricket matches on our old radio while shaping clay, my hands trembling with every wicket.

That Surjit smell takes me back too. My brother's dreams are woven into those damp jerseys, and I still hear the radio shouts in our balcony mornings.

Ah, Surjit turf! My old Atlas's tyres know every bump of that road, bhalia. I delivered a parcel there that day, and the shouting made my bell sound like a whisper.
