The problem isn't free power, yaar, it's that our farmers are trapped! They grow water-guzzling paddy because the government promises to buy it, and the free electricity to run tube wells makes it the only safe bet to pay off debts. My own chacha ji spends more on diesel for the tractor than on power, but he still can't afford to experiment with maize or vegetables that use less water. So the groundwater keeps dropping, and we keep digging deeper, all for a crop that's burning our land dry.
