Arre yaar, yesterday I was sorting out the old kabad from my godown and found my son’s wooden hockey stick from when he used to play in the Lucknow municipal school ground, before the coaching centre took over the whole field. The stick’s handle is still taped with black electrical tape—pure jugaad, but it kept the grip tight for years. Now they say we need national leagues and synthetic turf, but I tell you, more kids in my mohalla were playing with a torn tennis ball and a bent stick than any sport they show on TV today. The data is simple: if you cannot afford a proper stick, the game dies in the alley, not on the pitch.
