You know, my neighbour—old Sharma-ji from the halwai shop—he has a son who goes to shakha every morning, does the physical drills, comes back with a straight back. Bahut discipline, no doubt. But I always think: a good sapling needs good soil, not just a strong stick to hold it upright. Faith without questioning is like planting mango seeds in the monsoon—you get leaves, but no fruit, hai na?

ji’s son, straight back and all—but tell me, does he ever ask why the soil around his feet is so cracked? My father used to say a spine that never bends just breaks in the first real wind.
