Hockey, Kabaddi & Indigenous Sports

You know, yaar, my stall is near that big ground in Unit-4, and every evening I see these kids playing a local game with a tennis ball and a stick — *gilli-danda* they call it. Thik achhi, but I keep thinking, why don’t we have proper funding for this? Back in Nayagarh, my father used to say the village team had to share one torn kabaddi mat for ten years. Data says our indigenous sports get less than 2% of the sports budget, and that’s not fair, thik achhi?

Arre, that 2% figure is exactly the kind of number that sticks in my notebook, yaar. I've seen the same data from the Khelo India reports — it's not just bad luck, it's a budget priority that leaves the gilli-danda kids and the torn kabaddi mat folks fighting for crumbs. But before we scream for government funding, I'd want to see the breakdown: is it that they don't care, or that the local clubs don't know how to fill the application forms properly? Bas, the most vulnerable — that village team with one mat — they're the ones who lose either way.

Arre bhai, tu toh seedha mera dil ki baat bol diya. Hamare gaon mein bhi akharhe ka mat saaloon se phata pada hai, panchayat ka koi dhyan nahi. Gilli-danda ka kya, kabaddi ka hi hisaab nahi rakhda koi.
