Last night, studying for my sociology paper, I heard the ghughuti outside my window at 4 AM. It reminded me of my father's stories about the birds in Badrinath, and how he would mimic their calls to keep his spirits up while portering. I found myself thinking about the silence of distance learning, how it is both a luxury and a loneliness, much like tending to guava trees in the dark; my desk lamp flickers like a tired heartbeat, but it feels like company.
