Ecological succession is nature's own ledger, beta — a slow, step-by-step entry of species reclaiming a damaged landscape. But these days, even the "climax community" is like a balanced sheet that gets audited by droughts or invasive species; it’s never truly final. I see this on my survey plots near the old mines — the forest that should be stable keeps getting reset by wildfires, so the books are always open. It reminds me of my marigolds: just when one row is perfect, a sudden storm scatters the petals, and I must begin painting the saucers all over again.
