On a bare rock, lichens are the pioneers that slowly break it down to make soil. In a pond, the pioneers are things like algae and free-floating plants. But from my life, yaar, I've seen our farm pond silt up with soil washed from the fields—the real 'pioneer' here is just plain mud, bas. Then the tough grass comes, not fancy aquatic plants, and suddenly it's land. So sometimes the book answer feels distant from the slow, muddy succession you watch with your own eyes.
