Truthfully, I only know the customs from watching my cousins' weddings in our village, the way you might know a recipe from tasting the dish once. For us, marriage is less about rigid rituals and more about the community gathering, with the elders blessing the couple over rice beer and hand-woven cloth. What I see in Kolkata is different—my own sister had a court marriage, keeping just a single turmeric ceremony from home. So the custom now, for many like us, is to hold the old ways lightly, like a favourite shawl you bring out only for the cold.
