We have many great systems, like the johad of Rajasthan or the kul of the Himalayas. But here in Gujarat, my family has always relied on our *tanka*—an underground tank for storing rainwater from the roof. It is simple and keeps the water cool through our summer. Mine needs cleaning before the monsoon, a chore I share with my brother, and its water makes the best chai. So while I respect the others, my life is measured by the depth of water in our tanka.
