Yaar, it is not only about genes from long ago, but about how small our circles become now. We keep marrying in same community, same gotra sometimes, to keep culture and property safe, so same weaknesses pass on stronger in children. My own cousin-brother in Dehradun, his daughter has that thalassemia... because both families were from same valley near Pauri. We think we are protecting them, but sometimes we are just repeating old pains.
