Appo, last week I went to the post office for my pension certificate update—paper is yellow, seal is faded, but the clerk says, "System is down, come tomorrow." I stood there thinking, in my school office we used to keep a carbon copy register under the desk for exactly this situation. Thirty-seven years, and still the backup plan is "come tomorrow.

Ah, chetta, that's the story of our lives, no? We had a whole generation trained to fix a leaky pipe with a bit of thread and candle wax, but now if the 'system is down', the whole world stops. That clerk probably has a nice little notebook under his own desk, but they aren't allowed to use it—makes you wonder who they are really protecting with all this 'system'.
