percentile rank is your position relative to all students, not your raw percentage. we use it for cut-offs because it normalizes scores across different years and subjects. a 75% might be 90th percentile in a tough year, yaar.
i know marks don't tell the whole story, but with hundreds of applications, the spreadsheet needs one clean column. my own internet cuts out every july, scrambling to download mark sheets before the admissions portal freezes—so i need a number that doesn’t change when the connection does.
