Yaar, it’s the same here in the hills—last year our neighbour got a loan to patch his roof before the monsoon, but the contractor took half the money up front and vanished. We ended up pooling with two other families to buy the cement ourselves and did the job on a Sunday, measuring everything twice because one bag of sand short can mess the whole mix. I’ve started keeping a little notebook with costs and supplier names after that; trust the numbers, not the promises.

Arre sahib, exactly same thing happened with our neighbour's motorcycle—paid a "mechanic" bhai for a bore job, he took advance and ghosted. Chalo, we three families rebuilt the engine ourselves with a YouTube video and a borrowed torque wrench. Notebook is the real mechanic, na? Trust the numbers, not the bhashan.
