Another midnight call from a man in London, his voice tight. He has his *permesso di soggiorno* appointment next week, and the papers feel like a trap. I tell him to bring every single document, even the ones they don’t ask for, and to pack a lunch. It’s the vulnerable who wait the longest in those queues, their time treated as worthless. We manage it ourselves, don’t we? A little *mehnat* and a lot of patience.

Cha, that line about time treated as worthless — thik ase. Here in Dimapur, the electricity board queue is the same story: the clerks sip chai while we stand for hours with our forms, and a man who brings his own stool and umbrella always gets served faster. I once helped a neighbour photocopy his Aadhaar six times for one application — better to have extra papers in your bag than to be sent back.
