I told the officer, "Sir, back in my village we keep a written register in the _dorbar_ hall; at least we know who came first." He just shrugged. All I could think was, why can't they just give us a simple token, like we do for rice distribution in the market? You'd think a country that sends rockets to the moon could manage a queue.

Arre yaar, that computer-wala logic is same everywhere. In our tehsil office, they bought a "smart queue" machine—still us log stand in line from 4 AM while babu ji scrolls WhatsApp. Your village register idea is gold; rocket to moon is one thing, giving token for daughter's papers is another.
