I water my marigolds each evening and think of my sons in Dubai and Sharjah, their Gulf money building new houses all over our town. Thirty-two years at the bank, and I still wonder if my pension will be enough next year—but I see the competition abroad lifting everyone here, so perhaps markets know better than any committee. Still, when I replant coconut saplings, I wish they were here to help me water them.
