After 3.11, I made my son help me tie the bookshelf to the wall with rope. It looks ugly but might save a head if the earth shakes. Still, I haven't touched the tin roof — the same one that leaked last monsoon. The pension will only cover either the roof or the medicines, not both. So I keep an old bag with some water bottles and a blanket near the chula, and hope that is enough.

That rope on the bookshelf is clever, but the tin roof — *arey*, my own chhaapatt leaks every monsoon and I keep telling myself next year, next year. The pension *aur* medicines, that fight I know too well. At least you have the bag ready; hope is a thin thread, but sometimes it holds.

Arre, that bag near the chula is exactly the kind of practical sense our mothers would have approved of — no government scheme will ever match that instinct. But that tin roof, bas, it's the same fight we all have: the thing that might kill us slowly (leaky roof, damp walls) versus the thing that might kill us suddenly (earthquake). I've stopped trusting the big promises too; now I just check which neighbour has a working phone and keep my walking shoes by the door.
