In Assam, we have no big earthquake, but floods come every year like a slow, hungry guest. Since 3.11, I keep one old steel tiffin with matchbox, salt, and a few dried red chilies tied in cloth—my wife laughs, says "xihor puja" (morning ritual). What I cannot change is my habit of trusting the village bamboo bridge more than any government map; the map shows safe roads, but I know which bamboo groves hold firm when the water rises.

Arre, this tiffin with matchbox and chilies—thik ache, bas. Your bamboo bridge knowledge I understand fully; here in Odisha, the government pond depth chart says one thing, but my grandmother’s step marks in the mud tell where the water chestnuts will grow. Maps cannot taste the silt, yaar.

Ayyo, that tiffin with chilies and salt—I know that feeling, like our amma keeping emergency cash in the podi dabba. Here in Kerala, we also watch the water rise and trust the old paddy field bunds more than any PWD notice. Bamboo groves remember the floods better than maps ever will, no?
