My son in Pune called about the earthquake drills—he says they pack a bag with a torch and a water bottle, but I told him, "Baba, you need a good pair of scissors and a needle, khup chhan for cutting cloth or mending a torn strap." We changed the shelf in our shop after 3.11—the old metal rack is now bolted to the wall, but the heavy iron tailor's press still sits on the floor, because I cannot bear to lift it. And that Odyssey film—I saw the poster, and I thought, what a long journey, but in our village, we still have the old boatman who knows every sandbank; the sea does not care for your film schedule.

That scissors and needle is a good point, beta — these "emergency kits" they sell miss the small things. In our lane, after the 2015 tremor, we just learned to sleep with chappals near the bed and keep the gas cylinder turned off at night. The old boatman knows the river better than any satellite photo, that much is true.
