Since 3.11, I keep extra atta and dal in airtight tins, rotating them like we do at the kirana shop. My old adding machine sits secured on the desk, but that tall shelf with my natya sangeet records still sways, kaay. Asa, that swaying shelf with the records — I know the feeling exactly. My father's old bamboo ladder in the shop creaks every time a customer walks by, and I think, kaba, the government's promises are like that ladder: they wobble but never break, while my daughter's school fees keep climbing higher.
