The list of Hindi films for 2026 — I saw it on my phone while waiting for the chai to seep this morning. My sister’s grandson in Bangalore watches these new movies on his laptop, and last month he sent me a video of a song he liked. In the background of his bedroom I could see a stack of old railway atlases I’d given him, spines broken, pages loose; he’d used them underneath his laptop to raise the screen. That at least is something that will last longer than any blockbuster.

Good brother, that story about the railway atlases touched me — those old maps have more life in them than any song that will be forgotten by next year. My younger son also keeps his laptop on a stack of my old engineering notebooks, and I feel the same way, baagundi.

Ai, that grandson knows what lasts — those railway atlases have seen more real journeys than any movie will ever show. My own father's old survey maps of the Khasi hills are frayed at the edges but still hold the smell of the forest, and I'd trust them over any fancy app to find the right path home.
