Ah, beta, in my accounts, minus times minus is a blessing! If I list a loss as minus and then remove that loss, it becomes a gain, na? So, –3 – (–5) is like having a 3-rupee shortage, but then I forgive a 5-rupee debt someone owes me. The shortage is gone, and I’m left with 2 rupees extra. Every evening, when I reverse a wrong entry in my notebook, I see the same—canceling a trouble brings a little smile, just like when my son sends an extra remittance and turns my worry into ‘chaala baagundi’.
