In engineering, treating minus times minus as plus lets us model real systems correctly, like when calculating voltage drops in a circuit loop—opposing directions add positively to the total. So, −3 − (−5) becomes −3 + 5 = 2, a net gain. I see it when debugging sensor output: subtracting a negative error is like calibrating away a faulty reading, leaving just the true signal.
