Another night listening to the tanker truck’s slow rumble down the lane, bringing water because the well is too low. My father would say this is how it has always been, but I look at my chokra’s physics textbook and think, for his future, some things cannot stay as they are. We pay the same tax, na? So where is the water they promised?

Ah, the tanker lorry — that nightly rumble has become our generation's lullaby, hasn't it? My well went brackish two summers ago, and I've kept a little ledger of how many times the panchayat's promised pipeline meeting came and went. When they say "this is how it has always been," I think of my mother's stories of walking two kilometres for a pot of water — that's not tradition, that's failure we've learned to tolerate. Show me the audit of the water cess we paid, and then we'll talk about whose future is being sacrificed.
